Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis

According to the medical profession, there is no known cure for rheumatoid arthritis. Unlike osteoarthritis, which is essentially the loss of cartilege resulting in loss of lubrication of the joints, rheumatoid arthritis involves the immune system attacking the joints, causing often debilitating inflammation.

Because the immune system is involved, this form of arthritis is sometimes associated with other chronic disorders, particularly of the heart and lungs.

Pharmacology has come up with three general classes of drugs to handle the problem, namely, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, and disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Unfortunately, these are known to have serious side effects, to the point where the “cure” is worse than the disease. Many drugs are withdrawn after a public outcry. Moreover, they only mask the symptoms and don’t deal with the real problem.

If the problem causing rheumatoid arthritis is the immune system attacking the joints, we must target the reason why this is happening. Medical science has not yet come up with an answer to this, so in the meantime, those who are looking for a more lasting treatment for rheumatoic arthritis, should focus on getting their immune system to function more efficiently.

For this reason, a natural approach is best. Unlike drugs, natural treatments for rheumatoid arthritis don’t override and suppress our bodies’ normal immune functions, but nourish and support it, producing more lasting results.

There are also natural supplements which testing has shown to reduce joint inflammation and support the repair of joint cartilege. The two most well known of these, is glucosamine and chondoitrin.

You also want to pump yourself full of good antioxidants, to prevent free radicals making a mess in there. Finally, a good vitamin and mineral supplement, particularly if glyconutrients are involved, will nourish your cells and allow them to “communicate” with each other.

This three-pronged attack against cause behind rheumatoid arthritis has been known to work wonders.
One treatment on its own rarely produces the best results, but hit it from three directions and you’re really onto something.

Around 107,000 people are said to be hospitalized thanks to bad reactions with NSAIDS (“Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs” – the group of drugs Vioxx belonged to). And at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients.

If ever there was a set of statistics that would make me doubt the integrity of a large drugs company ever again, these are it. All my bleating might prove a point, but it doesn’t make your joints any better, does it.

So what CAN you do…?
